Coach Educator

Leigh Taylor is the founder of the Showhunter discipline in New Zealand; now a nationally recognized discipline of Equestrian Sport New Zealand. Leigh teaches commonsense horsemanship that is applicable to all equestrian disciplines. Leigh’s method of the forward system of riding “Position = Control™” has been internationally trademarked. Leigh often describes her training and mentoring methods as really just about “how to be an effective rider… not solely about show hunter or jumping…really focusing on good, all-around horsemanship skills.”

Presently, Leigh is a fulltime Equestrian Coach / Mentor, and is also under the Equestrian Sport New Zealand (ESNZ) Coaches program; is a select member of the ESNZ Coach’s Advisory Team;  an ESNZ National Judge trainer & assessor; ESNZ Judge; ESNZ  National Seminar Speaker. Leigh is a New Zealand show hunter Judges’ Advisor.  Leigh travels all over New Zealand, Australia, and USA; judging horse shows, and training / mentoring riders, coaches, judges, examiners and anyone interested in furthering their equine knowledge (including SPCAs, speaking at conventions, local kindergartens etc).  Leigh works with all levels & ages of riders and interested participants; and mounts too.

Leigh’s past positions include:

A.H.S.A Judge (USA); IHSA (USA) Team member (Regional/National Champion); Whipper-In for the Chillybrook Hounds; ANRC (USA) “2” Nationally Rated Rider;  Handicapped Rider Program; CESHS Medal Recipient;  Founding Head of the Waikato Showhunter Group; Committee member Showjumping  Waikato; Chief Pony Club Instructor for the Otaki Pony Club; Past Committee Member of the Waikato Hunt Committee;  Past Committee  Member of the Waikato Horse Trials Group;  Past Member of the Waikato Hunt. Leigh has trained and worked with the New Zealand Western Young Rider International Teams five times, preparing them for their overseas’ competitions.

Leigh was a founding clinician in the then newly formed Equidays (NZ), now held annually at Mystery Creek. Her association with the horse world in New Zealand and beyond, spans Leigh across all equestrian disciplines, including both thoroughbred and harness racing; steeple chasing, Western, dressage, showjumping, showhunter, show ring,  endurance, hunting, and eventing just to name a few.

Most days, you find Leigh 24 / 7 back where her heart lies and that is in the ring teaching her students about position and control. Leigh has recently been invited to be an educator at Equitana 2014, being held in Melbourne In November.

Leigh is currently editing 2 volumes of her latest books focusing on position and control; and a series of training gymnastics and exercises for horse and rider. Leigh is also a regular columnist for several magazines and is a guest blogger for other popular online social media sites.
