At 18.2hh Glenbrooke Rich as Roses makes quite a statement in any ring, but on Monday it wasn’t just his size making waves . . . instead the big grey won his first-ever EvoEvents Horse Grand Prix at the Wairarapa Labour Weekend Showjumping and Show Hunter Championships.

His doting 19-year-old rider Sophie Scott from Palmerston North couldn’t have been prouder of the gelding she’s had since he was four. “It was a good field, so I wanted to give it a good crack,” she said. “He is such a big horse . . . it was interesting though, everyone else found the lines very short but he found it quite easy. He is just so adjustable, the strides were all perfect – well, except for the treble which was a little short, but he is so clever we were fine.”

She felt his big stride worked to her advantage, and now is looking to step him up to World Cups if everything goes to plan. “He just loves to jump and is a real character. He isn’t easy to ride but we have a good understanding of each other, so it works out.”

Fourteen started the class with just four coming back for the jump-off, with three of those all double clear. In the end it was a two horse contest though with just .26 of a second between Sophie and Brooke Edgecombe (Waipukurau) aboard LT Holst Andrea.

Sophie and Glenbrooke Rich as Roses stopped the clock at 41.67 with Brooke and LT Holst Andrea coming home in 41.93. Maurice Beatson (Dannevirke) and Central Park filled third spot with their double clear in 43.96 while Katharine Van Tuyl (Palmerston North) aboard Double J Sunshine were fourth with four faults in their 50.29-second effort.

Sophie’s Grand Prix win topped off an excellent show with her growing team, she was also fifth in the FMG Young Rider, second and third in the Matthews Hanoverian Seven-Year-Old, first equal in the UltraMox Six-Year-Old and third in the horse mini prix.

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix a double clear from Penny Borthwick (Masterton) and her very consistent Foxden’s Merlot won her fifth grand prix on the trot, when they headed home a small but quality field. Tessa Mason (Napier) and the perennial Mr Acho had to settle for second after taking a rail in the jump-off. Penny was also fourth aboard Rednalhgih Cowan with a four-fault opening round.

Wairarapa area chair Heather Ritchie said the extra work required to run under COVID Alert Level 2 was a lot. “Putting together the response plan and paperwork takes quite a bit of work but the bigger challenge is getting riders to return that paperwork too,” she said. “We have really appreciated those who have respected that and been diligent in getting things back to us. The more help riders give us by doing what they are asked to do, then the more chance there is for shows to continue.”

A nationwide shortage of port-a-loos meant the show had to use two different companies who brought the toilets in from three centres. Riders had “on the whole” been appreciative.

But she said one of the toughest things was to have to turn away spectators who had turned up at the show to watch but been turned away due to COVID restrictions.
