Zoe Shore and Saffron. Winners of the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider at SCNO Srping has Sprung 2-3 Oct

Teen Jess Hore planned for an easy start at her first show of the season but it seems her star pony Tallyho Scoundrel had other plans.

The Millers Flat combo were double clear en route to victory in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix class at the SCNO Spring has Sprung Show at Waimate at the weekend. Just two of the original six starters came back for the jump-off where both kept their slates clean but Jessica and Tallyho Scoundrel stopped the clock at 44.35 seconds over the Roger Laplanche-designed course, to the 45.58-second effort from runner-up Johanna Wylaars (Christchurch) and Wembleybrook Tiffany.

It was the third Pony Grand Prix win for 13-year-old Jess and Gus as her pony is known at home. “He is not an easy ride but he is one of the easiest I have,” says the year nine student from Columba College in Dunedin. Home is the 28,000 hectare sheep and beef Beaumont Station in Central Otago where the family also breed sport horses, so riding everything has been a part of her DNA since forever.

Mum Abby, who also competes in showjumping, keeps the horses fit for Jess when she can’t get home from boarding school for the weekend. Jess is also an under-14 Otago netball representative, so her weekends have been busy. Lockdown proved a blessing for lots of riding and getting her team fit.

“I do love Gus,” she says. “He is pretty cheeky, but I love that he always wants to be ridden, has a really good attitude and is always keen for cuddles.”

This is Gus and Jess’ second season together. “With it being our first show of the season, I just wanted to go in and have fun,” says Jess, who is trained by mum and Olivia Robertson. “We were second to go in the jump-off and I was just going for a clear. I didn’t think he would be that fast but he does cover the ground well. I am really happy with him.”

Next on the schedule may be the Otago Spring Show at Mosgiel (October 16-17), but given COVID, everything is a wait and see. It is a long haul to anywhere for the family, given their remoteness, with the closest show two hours away, and the weekend’s effort five.

At 5’8” Jess isn’t sure she’ll still be on ponies come the Land Rover Horse of the Year Show, but she is already out on hacks and picked up a win aboard Centino in the 1.25m horse championship at the weekend. She and Gus were also third in the 1.2m pony class.

Area chairperson Tim Douglass said the weekend had been a winner. “I am very pleased with the show,” he said. “The Southern Canterbury A&P Association had the grounds in top notch condition and I am glad we went ahead. Everyone did what was expected of them to enable us to carry out the show safely.”

He extended a special thanks to event secretary Rebecca Drummond and the rest of the committee. “It was thanks to their efforts the show was a success in trying times.”

The show attracted 343 horses and riders. Rebecca says plenty of extra work had gone into ensuring regulations were followed and people were safe.

“There was a lot of extra planning to structure the running of five bubbles but it was well worth all the late nights to get the first show of the season under the belts of riders,” she said. “Riders were really appreciative of the efforts.”
