Cheleken and Ultramox 6yo South Island Champion Eye Candy & Katie Meredith

with Breeder/Owner Jennie Pike

Marlborough Show Jumping Group have turned on a brilliant first day of the 2020 Select Wineries South Island Show Jumping and Show Hunter Championships. Sunny skies, beautiful ground conditions and winners celebrations are making it a show to remember.

Lex Peddie is the course designer for Ring 1. Sarah Ching is the designer for Ring 2, with Grant Burnett in Ring 3.

Canterbury’s Molly Buist-Brown and her gelding Vali won the FMG Young Rider South Island Championship class. Molly bought the now 8-year-old gelding as a rising 3-year-old. They’re always a very competitive combination and have recorded a huge number of wins since starting their SJ career. “He’s amazing and has been jumping phenomenally this season.” Molly says. “I’ve just late entered the Premier Grand Prix for tomorrow so will see how he feels. The show is also amazing, the grounds look awesome and it’s been so well run.”

Canterbury rider Jess Land and her horse Emilio MSH took out the Harrison Lane Pro Am South Island Championship. This is the combinations first season at Pro Am Level. Jess says “He was amazing today; we had no warm up and I didn’t know the course so he was great to pull that out! I’m so happy for him, he’s been so consistent and has placed in every start at this height this half of the season, so he deserved the win!”. Jess is aiming for the Pro Am Class at the Horse Of The Year Show next month and also hoping to get another start or two in at Mini Prix level. She was another rider praising the Marlborough SJ committee, “It’s an absolutely lovely show, the grounds are spot on and they are running an amazing event”.

Nelson rider Peita Milne and Ngahiwi Warrior won the Equifibre Junior Rider Series South Island Championship. Adding to a great start to the year for the combination who also won the National Junior Rider Title last month.

Tegan Fitzsimon and Campari were the winners of the Matthews Hanoverians 7yo Breeder  South Island Championship. The Corofino II gelding is owned by his breeders the Tapley family and currently leads the National Matthews Hanoverians 7yo Series.

The East Coast Performance Horses 5yo Breeder South Island Championship was won by the current National Champions Katie Meredith and Vulcan GNZ. He is by Cartell GNZ and is owned by Katie in partnership with Pauline Quigley.

Katie enjoyed further success when also winning the Cheleken and Ultramox 6yo Breeder South Island Championship with Eye Candy. This mare is by Euro Sport Centavos and is owned by her breeder Jennie Pike.

Canterbury visitor Charlotte Knowler took out the Dunstan Horsefeeds Amateur Rider Series class with the 8yo gelding Payback. With another Canterbury Rider Courtney Townsend and Corofina ECPH winning the Main-Events University Class.

The show is being held at the Marlborough Equestrian Park near Blenheim and competition continues tomorrow. The highlight will be the POLi Payments Horse Super League South Island Championship which boasts $10,000 worth of Prize money. South Island’s top ponies will also compete for their share of $4,950 in the Country TV Pony Grand Prix.
