The weather gods weren’t playing ball in Wairoa at the weekend. The two day Wairoa A&P Show did squeak through, but torrential rain saw the cancellation of the Wairoa ESNZ Jumping Show on Sunday.

Both the Equissage Horse Grand Prix and Country TV Pony Grand Prix were held in patchy weather but riders did their best over the Heather MacDonald-designed courses. The weather forced organisers to move things around a little to ensure good footing for all after 100mils of rain.

Just five lined up in the Equissage Horse Grand Prix with Sarah West’s (Matamata) four fault round aboard Oaks Centurian nabbing the win. Jesse Linton (Hastings) and Vitess filled second with their eight fault effort and Simon Wilson (Waipukurau) aboard McMillans Ariados in third. Sarah was also third in the FMG Young Rider class aboard Delamerie.

The Country TV Pony Grand Prix was just as light on clears too, with only Keira Page (Waiheke Island) and Redcliffs Colour Me In keeping her slate clear for the win. Runner-up in the 14-strong class was Dylan Bibby (Onga Onga) and My Funky Monkey who had a single time penalty in the opening round.

The show attracted slightly lower entries than usual, with 290 combinations competing.
