Logan Massie decided very quickly he had to throw everything at the jump-off in the Equissage Horse Grand Prix at the Central Hawke’s Bay A&P Spring Show, or not even bother going back in the ring.

As it was, he and 10-year-old Intellect smashed it, coming home in 42.23 seconds with Robert Steele (Dannevirke) aboard LT Holst Bernadette through in 44.6 and Brooke Edgecombe (Waipukurau) on LT Holst Andrea crossing the flags in 45.04. All three were double clear. Fourteen started the class and Logan was last to go in the six strong jump-off. He had seen Brooke go and figured no one would catch her and when he heard Robert had done just that, figured he had “been gunning it”. “By the time I went in I knew that even if I went double clear, I would only be fourth or fifth, so it was go for the win or not go back in.”

The Dannevirke farmer planned to shave time where others had failed. “It worked,” said Logan. “I am very happy with him. It was a good show for us and Philippa (Howells) designed nice courses all weekend.”

Logan bought the horse as a seven-year-old and their Grand Prix victory was just their second. “He’s had a lot of placings through and is normally a second or third kind of horse . . . but he’s been close in every class he has started in this season.”

Logan has had a lot of horses in work so Intellect had a later start than usual. “He hasn’t been out of his comfort zone this season. He’s another year older and stronger. These bigger and slower horses always take a bit longer than you think they will but I know he has a lot more good rounds in him. Each season he has continued to improve and that’s the main thing.”

Intellect will now start in the POLi Payments FEI World Cup round at Hawera next weekend and continue to chase the series. Logan and girlfriend Alexa Dodson have recently established a new horse complex just five minutes from Dannevirke and have around 15 horses in work. “It’s nice they are so close to where we live,” says Logan. “They used to be 40 minutes away at mum and dad’s. This is quite a big operation and it’s going well.”

In the Country TV Pony Grand Prix, just two of the 13 starters came back for the jump-off where Lily Moore steered former Pony of the Year Fun House to victory – their second on the trot – coming home with four faults in 47.6 seconds. Dylan Bibby (Onga Onga) and Daisy Patch also picked up four in the jump-off with a slower time of 51.04.

The two day show was held in Waipukurau.
