World no.1 Tim Price heads a strong contingent of Kiwis at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials next month when he looks to defend his crown. Tim has his 2018 winner Ringwood Sky Boy on the card, along with Bango and Xavier Faer. His wife Jonelle, also a multi-5* winner, is entered aboard her star duo, Badminton winner Classic Moet and Faerie Dianimo who won Luhmuhlen. Former Burghley winner Caroline Powell will start aboard On the Brash.
Making her 5* debut in the UK is Samantha Lissington aboard Ricker Ridge Rui with Ginny Thompson no doubt looking to build on her Badminton outing aboard Star Nouveau. Dan Jocelyn is entered aboard Blackthorn Cruise.
New Zealand has a stellar record at Burghley with both Sir Mark Todd (1987, 1990, 1991, 1997 and 1999) and Andrew Nicholson (1995, 2000, 2012, 2013 and 2014) having won five titles apiece. Andrew’s haul includes a hattrick aboard Avebury (2012-2014). Blyth Tait has also won twice at Burghley (1998 and 2001) with Caroline Powell taking the title in 2010.
Burghley is considered the world’s greatest 5* event
Competitors are chasing a massive prize purse, with £95,000 to the winner and a hefty £50,000 to the runner-up. The CCI5*-L event gets underway with the first horse inspection on Wednesday (September 4) with the dressage running Thursday and Friday, the Captain Mark Phillips-designed cross country on Saturday and showjumping on Sunday.
