It is with much sadness that Dressage NZ advises of the passing of Helen Ransom (Dannevirke)

(L) Helen at a Young Rider Camp in 2003 doing what she loved with fellow selectors Jeanette Trevelyan and Helen Hughes-Keen (R)

Helen was an island and national dressage selector for many years from the mid 90’s and the Chair of the selector panel following the resignation of Mrs Jill Gould

Prior to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, ESNZ was presented with a legal challenge and subsequent appeal regarding the non-selection of a rider as a Reserve rider for the Games.

Helen contributed to the defence of these challenges in a totally professionally manner; her integrity throughout her duration as an island selector and Chair of selectors was unquestionable

Helen was also a well respected List 1 judge with a keen eye for quality and correct training. She was always very fair in her assessments  and  although considered by some to be a “tough judge” it was more like “tough love” encouraging riders to be better and improve their performances

Helen was a founder member of Dressage SHB  in the early 1970’s alongside Eric Ropiha, and was a keen competitor at her local dressage events up to Medium level

Helen was always immaculately “turned out” and dressage events whether riding, judging or acting in her official capacity as a selector.  Her company was enjoyed by many members over the years – her smile was infectious along with her quiet but sharp sense of humour.

Our condolences go to Helen’s family and close friends
