It was an emotional day at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials when Andrew Nicholson retired the 2017 champ Nereo.

The 18-year-old Spanish-bred chestnut had been sent to the holding box during the final horse inspection, where Nicholson opted not to re-present him. He finished his 4* eventing career with Nicholson leading him around the main arena.

The combination had their first international outing in the CIC2* at Somerley Park in 2007 where they placed third. Since then they’ve won two bronze medals – team and individual – at the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games, were fourth at the 2012 London Olympic Games and eighth individual at the 2014 FEI WEG.

Of their 12 4* starts at Badminton, Burghley and Pau, they had six podium finishes, including two wins – Badminton in 2017 and Pau in 2012. From their five starts at Burghley, they have thrice placed second, and had a memorable win in the CICO3* at Aachen in 2009. From 40 international outings, they have 11 times finished on their dressage score, including twice at 4* level.

Nereo’s owner and long time supporter of Nicholson, Libby Sellar was present for the retirement along with members of her family.

Nereo is by Fines out of Berganza-17 (who is by Golfi) and owned by Deborah Sellar.

Enjoy your retirement Nereo and thank you for all the fantastic moments you have provided for us to enjoy over the years.
