Excitement is building in Rome at the 86th CSIO5* Nations Cup with all the New Zealand showjumpers through the first horse inspection with flying colours.

The riders are relishing the big band of supporters in the historic city for the event. Both Daniel Meech and Bruce Goodin say they are all ready for the big challenge ahead.

“It is a big challenge ahead that’s for sure,” says Meech, “with many of the best here it will be very tough on Friday for the Nations Cup.”

Goodin is also excited. “It is great to be here,” he says. “I am excited about the challenge ahead, to be competing at such a big show with the quality field that is here.”

Samantha McIntosh says it is great to have such a huge team of Kiwi supporters in Rome for the Cup.

First up will be the 1.45m class this evening, followed by the Nations Cup class and finally the 1.60m Rolex Grand Prix.

“The Show Grounds are beautiful with so much history, and of course, Rome is Rome,” says Meech. “It has been raining but the forecast for the next few days is hot. The grass surface looks superb although it is quite new.”

There has been a lot of work done in preparation for the show. The main classes will be held at Piazza di Siena, which takes its name from where the Borghese family hail from. In the late 18th century, the family created the gardens enjoyed by Roman residents and visitors alike. Organisers say it takes some very careful choreography for cyclists, joggers, dog-walkers and tourists to share the space being occupied this week by the world’s very best showjumping combinations. It is this that makes CSIO Rome one of a kind.

Nine countries are chasing the honours. McIntosh is aboard her star stallion Check In 2, with Meech on Fine, Goodin on Bäckatorps Danny V and new-comer Lisa Cubitt aboard RLE Legoland.

The horse details:
Check In 2 – owned by Takapoto Equestrian
Fine – owned by AB Kastanjegärden and Daniel Meech
Bäckatorps Danny V – owned by Bäckatorp Ryder AB
RLE Legoland – owned by River Lodge Equestrian
